What Happens if You Take an Abortion Pill When Not Pregnant?

Life can be tough sometimes. And some of the toughest times for women include pregnancy as not all women are ready for the responsibility, risk, or change that it brings. If you are not planning on conceiving, missed periods can be your biggest woes.

Have missed your periods? Do you think you might be pregnant? The first thing you should do is take a pregnancy test. Or rather, take a couple of pregnancy tests. (To eradicate the chances of false positives and negatives.)

If your test comes positive and you do not want to continue with the conception, your best option would be to visit an abortion clinic.

Visiting a medical practitioner would ensure that you get the right solution for pregnancy termination. Trying to administer pills yourself or taking other extreme measures is not recommended.

But, what if, in the heat of the moment, you take an abortion pill yourself? And what if you are not really pregnant? Will it cause any side effects? Would it affect future pregnancies? Would it be harmful to your psychological and mental health?

Is it harmful if you take abortion pills if you are not pregnant?

No. Taking an abortion pill will cause no harmful effect on your body. It has no effect on future pregnancies. And no direct effect on your mental or psychological health. However, you may still experience common side effects of the pill. These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and low-grade fever.

To prevent such a situation, it is better that you visit us at Her Smart Choice and make a wise decision. We are here to educate, inform and help you make a smart choice.

When you visit one of our facilities, we leave no chance for any doubts.

If you are pregnant and would not like to continue with the conception, we can offer you several viable options. Options that are much safer than taking an abortion pill on your own. Here at Her Smart Choice, we offer you the choice of medication abortion and abortion via telehealth (phone).

The medication abortion involves abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol). This is the preferred method for pregnancies less than 10 weeks old. The two pills perform different functions. The experts at our facility can help administer the right dosage at the right time for the right and risk-free results.

Mifepristone blocks the progesterone receptors. This prevents progesterone from continuing the pregnancy. 24 or 48 hours after the first pill, misoprostol is given to expel the pregnancy. You might also start bleeding before you take the second pill.

When you are undergoing medication abortion, you need proper guidance and support. Both of these can be offered to you at our private abortion clinic. Feel free to contact us here to make an appointment.

We believe your right to be able to choose. It is your body, your life and so should be your choice.

While taking a pill while not pregnant would cause no major harm, we can help you better. With counseling, care, and confidential treatment, make the smart choice with Her Smart Choice.

How Do Women Feel After A Pregnancy Termination?

Did you know most women DO NOT regret their decision to terminate a pregnancy and are no more likely to experience mental health problems than women who carry an unplanned pregnancy to term?

What if you’ve already made your decision, but you are still not sure about your emotional health after the procedure? And you wonder, what will you possibly feel after pregnancy termination?

  1. The most common emotional reactions after pregnancy termination are minimal or none as it’s a personal choice.
  2. A small group of women may feel relief, transient guilt, sadness, and a sense of loss.
  3. There is no good evidence from large surveys that choosing to terminate an unwanted pregnancy places a woman at higher risk of subsequent depression than choosing to deliver an unwanted baby.
  4. The percentage of women who regret carrying and delivering an unwanted pregnancy is very high.

The type of abortion procedure you have depends on a few factors, including how far along you are in your pregnancy, your medical suitability, which procedures are available in your area, and your preferences. A health care provider can also discuss the options with you to help you make an informed decision.

What Should You Look For In An Abortion?

We understand it is difficult to know that you are pregnant and not ready! If you have made your decision to terminate or thinking about terminating your pregnancy, here are a few major factors you want to consider:

  • Is it safe?
  • What methods are available?
  • Will I be able to have kids in the future?
  • How much pain or bleeding will I have?
  • Where can I get the procedure done?
  • What are my benefit and expected outcomes?
  • What does it cost?.
  • What is the difference between Medical and Surgical Abortion?

Many women have questions about what is true or not based on what they have heard about abortion:

  • MYTH 1: Abortion is dangerous

♀ FACT: Legal abortion is one of the safest medical procedures available today. While abortion does have some risks, on the whole, carrying a pregnancy and giving birth have been found to be riskier than having an abortion. It is important to know that abortion performed by someone who is not trained (for example, by a woman herself or someone who is not a health care provider) may not be safe and can lead to serious complications, including bleeding, infection, infertility, and even death.

  • MYTH 2: Abortion will make me infertile

♀ FACT: When an abortion is performed safely by someone who has the training, it does not lead to difficulty getting pregnant in the future.

  • MYTH 3: Abortion increases the risk of breast cancer.

♀ FACT: Several studies have conclusively shown that having an abortion does not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

  • PROBABLE MYTH 4: Abortion increases my chance of miscarriage in the future

♀ FACT: A number of well-designed studies have found that early abortions do not increase the risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, or other complications with future pregnancies.

Your health care provider is the best source of information for questions and concerns related to your medical problem.

Which Type of Abortion is Right for You?

Did you know 1 in 4 women in the US will have an abortion by the age of 45?

There are two different ways an abortion can be performed in an OB/GYN’s office.

  1. The first is a medical abortion – meaning the abortion or pregnancy termination is completed by taking pills orally.
  2. The second is a surgical abortion. It’s performed as a standard surgical procedure called a D&C (Dilatation and Curettage) at a clinic or hospital.

The type of procedure you choose depends on several factors, including:

  • How far along you are in your pregnancy?
  • Which procedures are available in your area?
  • What are your personal preferences?

Options available may be different at different stages of pregnancy.

You might choose a medication abortion if you are less than ten weeks and wish to avoid an invasive procedure and anesthesia and prefer the privacy of being at home when you pass the pregnancy.

Which Type Of Abortion Is Right For You? Abortion Pills or Surgical Abortion

Which Type Of Abortion Is Right For You?

The benefits of medical abortion are (abortion pills):

  • No instruments or suction will be used, so you will not be exposed to the chance of cervical injury and uterine perforation that rarely occur with surgical abortion.
  • There is a very small likelihood of infection after medical abortion.
  • You will be at home during the actual abortion process.

If you are more than ten weeks pregnant, you might consider a surgical or aspirational abortion. This process takes place at a clinic or hospital under anesthesia. The abortion will be completed in one to two days. The time spent in the clinic is generally three to six hours.

The benefits of surgical abortion are:

  • It can be performed later in the pregnancy than a medical abortion.
  • It usually involves only one visit to the clinic.
  • There’s usually less bleeding and cramping than with a medical abortion.

Is Abortion Safe?

Did you know over 99.75% of abortions do not cause major medical problems?

In the early 1970s, the Population Council and CDC conducted a significant study on abortion safety; they concluded that abortion was considerably safer than continuing a pregnancy to delivery. By 1975, the Institute of Medicine had concluded that the public health benefits of abortion were well established.

Recently, researchers at UC-San Francisco used California Medicaid data on 54,911 abortions to see how many women had an emergency room visit or hospitalization as a result. The overall complication rate was 2% and most complications were minor. Only 0.03% of patients were transferred by ambulance to an emergency department on the day of the abortion.

So, if you are still asking: “Is abortion safe?,” here are a few more helpful points.

  1. A medical abortion that is performed in the United States in an Ob/Gyn’s office is safe and effective care.
  2. 3 in 10 women in the U.S. will have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old.
  3. Complications for all abortions are rare and safer when performed earlier in gestation.
  4. While any type of procedure carries associated risks that no medical procedure is 100% safe. The possibility of any major complication occurring in a hospital is 0.31% while the risk of minor complications such as an infection or failure from medicine is about 2-5%.
  5. Abortion is very common. In the hands of an experienced physician, it is 99.7% safe while giving birth is 14 times riskier than having an abortion.

The Top 5 Qualities to Look For in an Abortion Clinic

One of the crucial aspects of women’s healthcare in any country is to provide safe and quality abortion services to its people. According to estimates, approximately 25 percent of all pregnancies around the globe end in abortion. An abortion clinic should take care of both your emotional and medical health. Choosing to end your pregnancy is a very difficult decision to make but once you have decided that, the next major step is to choose an abortion clinic that provides sensitive and expert care.

Abortion Clinic Los Angeles

The following are the top 5 qualities that you should look for while choosing a clinic for undergoing abortion:

  • The staff that attend you should be polite and kind

The way the clinic staff treats you is one of the qualities that you should pay attention to while choosing a clinic to terminate your pregnancy. If the person at the clinic you speak to is cold, robotic, and indifferent then this may indicate how that abortion clinic views and treats its patients. A proper and quality clinic will make sure to treat its patients with kindness, sensitivity, and understanding from the very first phone call or visit of the patient to their last visit. You should also feel comfortable with and reassured by the individual you speak to at the clinic. In the event you feel un-cared for, judged or uncomfortable for any reason, it’s better to switch clinics.

  • The clinic should offer you a safe and effective procedure

Another important quality that you should look for in an abortion clinic is the way the doctor attends you, their competence, and the safety and efficacy of the procedure they provide. You should know that abortion is successful when it has no associated complications, maintains your fertility for future pregnancies, and should not be life-threatening to you.

  • The clinic should provide you with clear and accurate information

While looking for an abortion clinic, choose one that provides you with clear and accurate information about the procedure. This includes what happens during the procedure, when to call for help (for instance, what to do if you have heavy bleeding), and post and pre-abortion care. A good quality clinic will make sure that you are well informed about the procedure so that it makes it easier for you to make the right decision about getting an abortion. If the clinic provides thorough information  and instructions about the procedure, then it is a good indication that you will receive quality services there. Providing information requires effort and time; hence, if the person you have talked to is well informed about the procedure, then they will likely put the same effort and time into each facility and service they provide.

  • The clinic should maintain your privacy and confidentiality

Similar to any other medical clinic, abortion clinics should also maintain your privacy and confidentiality. Furthermore, since abortion still carries a stigma in many communities, it may add to the stress of undergoing an already stressful experience. In many abortion clinics, there is only one room by way of which everyone has to enter and exit. This may make you leave through a waiting room (after getting the procedure) full of people waiting for their turn. This can be a cause of shame and stress in those who want to keep the procedure private. Ideally, an abortion clinic that solely offers that service should have such a set up in which the patient, after getting an abortion, leaves by way of a separate waiting room. This reduces the number of individuals with whom they come into contact.

  • The clinic should provide effective follow-up care and services

A final important quality that you should look for in an abortion clinic is whether the clinic provides you with effective follow-up care and services. Providing follow-up checks is an important and vital aspect of quality healthcare. If a clinic is following up after the abortion procedure, it indicates that the healthcare provider cares about your health even after the procedure. At your follow-up appointment, you can get the detailed information regarding after-care and also discuss if you have any concerns or questions.

Tips on how you can choose a quality abortion clinic:

  • Never trust the ads on the internet or in your area’s phone book.
  • If possible, get a referral for a clinic from someone whom you can trust.
  • Call the abortion clinic and ask for information such as whether they do abortion or not. Avoid clinics that don’t give straightforward answers.
  • Ask regarding their services. For instance, you can ask what services and procedures do they offer? Can you take your parent or friend with you? What are the types of anesthesia that are offered and who will administer the anesthesia? What is their call of action in case of emergencies?
  • Ask regarding their fees. Ask what is covered in those fees. Do they take Medi-Cal or insurance?
  • When you visit the clinic, notice the clinic and its staff. Is the clinic dirty or clean? How experienced is the doctor who will do the procedure? Are they happy to give you all the details you want?

If you are experiencing an unwanted pregnancy, you’re likely feeling scared and even confused about what to do. While there are many options available to you in this situation, many women choose to have an abortion. There are a few different types of abortions, but they are all medical procedures that can safely end a pregnancy. Although they can be a trying experience, many women find that they are the best option for them physically, emotionally, and financially. If you are considering having an abortion, visiting a reputable and safe abortion clinic should be your first step.

There are many public and private abortion clinics available throughout the country. There are also some doctors that offer this procedure in their offices. Once you find out you are pregnant, your first step should always be to contact your general practitioner or your OB/GYN if you have one. They can check to make sure you are healthy, and then if you decide you want an abortion, they can refer you to a clinic near you that is a good fit for you based on your financial status. There are a few different types of abortions that are available in a clinic, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, and there’s also the option to receive an abortion pill, which you can take in the privacy of your home. Many people choose to have an abortion in a clinic, because it generally takes less than 15 minutes, and you will have the help of highly trained support staff who are very familiar with the procedure. Although abortion can be a very difficult and challenging situation, going to a trusted abortion clinic can make it a bit easier.
